Hair Restoration Q & A

How does hair restoration work?

Hair restoration with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) involves harnessing the power of growth factors in your own blood to stimulate hair follicle growth. When your PRP is injected into multiple areas of your scalp, these growth factors increase blood flow to your hair follicles.

This effect, in turn, stimulates hair growth and can even increase the thickness of each individual hair shaft. The entire PRP hair restoration process is minimally invasive and requires just a few injections.

What happens during a hair restoration treatment?

Your PRP hair restoration treatment at Integrity Aesthetics MD begins with a simple blood draw, usually from the inside bend of your arm. Dr. Shortz processes your blood in a centrifuge, which spins your blood and forces platelets and all of their attached growth factors to separate away.

The separated fluid is your platelet-rich plasma. Dr. Shortz draws your PRP into a syringe and injects it into several areas of your scalp. Because your scalp is going to need a little special aftercare over the following days to promote healing, Dr. Shortz finishes your visit by talking with you about scalp care and what to expect over the following days.

Hair restoration with PRP can be a little uncomfortable for some. If you’re worried about pain or are sensitive to injections, Dr. Shortz may recommend coming in about 20-30 minutes before your scheduled visit to apply a topical numbing cream.

How many hair restoration sessions do I need?

Even though you’re probably going to start noticing new hair growth after just a few weeks, it’s important to schedule several PRP hair restoration treatments, based on Dr. Shortz’s recommendations. He usually finds that going through three PRP sessions, each spaced at least four weeks apart, yields superior hair-growth results.

To prevent future hair loss and to continue stimulating your natural hair growth, Dr. Shortz might suggest coming into Integrity Aesthetics MD two or three times per year for touch-up PRP hair restoration treatments.
