Spider Veins Q & A

What causes spider veins?

Spider veins, which are basically smaller versions of varicose veins, develop as blood pools in your veins. This damages vein walls, which is why you notice that webbed bruise-like mark on your skin. You can develop spider veins because of:

  • Family history of spider veins
  • Working on your feet all day
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Weight gain

Though generally harmless, spider veins can make your legs feel heavy and can even lead to swelling in your legs, which can become increasingly uncomfortable.

How are spider veins treated?

At Integrity Aesthetics MD, you can meet with Dr. Shortz who’s a board-certified physician with specialized training in diagnosing and treating spider veins. In most cases, he can treat you right in the office using medical laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) systems.

During your spider vein treatment, Dr. Shortz moves the machine’s handheld device over your spider veins. Each burst of laser or light penetrates through your skin and gets absorbed by problem veins.

This intense energy forces veins to collapse. Don’t worry; blood simply circulates to healthier veins nearby. Treated veins turn into scar tissue, which gradually gets reabsorbed by your body. After several weeks, you start noticing that your former spider veins are virtually invisible.

How many spider vein treatments do I need?

Dr. Shortz tends to schedule you for a spider vein treatment consultation first to ensure the service is right for you. During your visit, he evaluates your spider veins and lets you know how many treatments you’re likely going to need.

Even though you should start noticing that your treated spider veins fade away within a few weeks of your first laser or IPL session, Dr. Shortz could recommend two or three monthly sessions — or more — for darker or more severe spider veins.

You might need to avoid strenuous exercise for a day or two after your spider vein treatment at Integrity Aesthetics MD, but you won’t have any significant downtime. Since sessions are quick, you can even schedule your spider vein treatments during your lunch break.
